Many photographers will offer an engagement or couple shoot as part of their package. But why is it important to have these photos done?
We’ve all seen photos of ourselves, or others, caught unawares staring at the camera with the look of startled rabbits in headlights. Even photo booths can fill people with a sense of dread. There’s also the photos of us standing awkwardly, not knowing where to put our hands, and with a false smile that would look more at home on aircraft cabin crew.
Let’s face it having your photo taken is rather a surreal experience, standing next to your loved one, with a photographer pointing a large camera in your face. No wonder most people feel, at first anyway, a little awkward. The aim of the couple shoot is to introduce you to the photographer and put you at ease in front of a camera. You will also get a fantastic photo that you can use on your wedding invites, Facebook or simply hang on your wall.
The couple shoot is probably the first time most people have been in front of a professional photographer since having their school photos taken. With a little bit of practice (and by that I mean about 15 minutes), you will start to relax in front of the camera, become more natural and your personality will start to show. Eventually (and I mean about 30 minutes), you will be ignoring the camera – and could even be enjoying the experience.
Although my style is mostly candid and un-posed, there’s usually call for a few group shots and something a bit more formal. The couple shoot will prepare you for this and will also help you ignore the camera and get on with the day.
By your wedding day standing in front of the camera will be second nature and you will look comfortable and relaxed in your photos – and not like a startled rabbit.
